Colac Otway Regional Advocacy Service (CORAS) is a not for profit, community based services providing support to people with a disability across the Colac/Otway and Surf Coast regions.

CORAS is funded by the Federal Department of Social Services to provide advocacy, outreach and referrals to people living with disability. CORAS is managed by a voluntary board of management to ensure we uphold the principles of our mission statement.

MISSION

Colac Otway Region Advocacy Service through its application as an advocacy service provider (CORAS) will provide individual advocacy to support people with disabilities residing in the Colac Otway and Surf Coast regions to:

  • Protect and promote the rights of people with disability
  • Stand beside and empower people with disability
  • Educate and work with service providers and community to acknowledge the right of a person with disabilities to be a valued and included member of his/her community;
  • Provide ongoing support as required to our consumers
  • Use our available resources to maximize the outcomes for our service users

Vision

CORAS will achieve success through building trusting relationships with consumers of our service, to reach outcomes that will enhance the lives of our consumers, and by encouraging our local community to be more inclusive, tolerant and to value and uphold each individual’s right to be protected and empowered to make decisions and choices.

Values

In meeting the needs of our consumers, CORAS will act as follows:

  • Our consumers will recognise CORAS as an organisation that achieves success through building trusting relationships and by involving consumers at all levels of decision making within the service
  • CORAS will promote its model in the community that reflects values of normalization, integration, inclusion, enhances and promotes the valued status of consumers and positively promotes CORAS as a valuable service in the community
  • CORAS will strive to achieve positive outcomes for consumers and in so doing further develop our culture and identity as a strong service building on its history and past achievements;
  • CORAS will recognise the importance of our core values and the need to provide support for people with disabilities in our community in their endeavour to be empowered, protect their rights and to be treated the same as others
  • CORAS will take reasonable care to avoid foreseeable risks for consumers without unduly limiting the ability of each person with a disability to take responsibility for his or her own decisions;
  • CORAS will continue to adopt responsible and sound management practices to maximize and enhance resources to provide an effective and efficient advocacy service.
  • CORAS will remain aware and focused on refraining from any activities that may result in a conflict of interest and impacts on any consumer outcome.
  • CORAS will develop an appropriate response plan to any accusation or situation that is identified as a potential conflict of risk.

BOARD OF MANAGEMENT

As a not-for-profit incorporated association, CORAS is managed by a voluntary Board of management who ensure we are operating in accordance with our vision and mission and utilising our funding appropriately.
Our board is made up of a diverse range of individuals from across the Colac Otway region.
